Immigration Lawyer for Swedish Citizenship — When You Need One

Last updated: 2026-05-15

Most citizenship applications can be handled without a lawyer. But in certain situations, legal help can make a real difference — especially now that the rules have tightened and pending applications are being reassessed under the new criteria from 6 June 2026.

When should you hire an immigration lawyer?

A lawyer is particularly valuable if you are in one of these situations:

⚠️

You have a pending application and are unsure whether you meet the new requirements from 6 June 2026

💼

Your income comes from self-employment, freelance work, or irregular employment

📋

You have entries in the criminal register, debts with Kronofogden, or periods of social assistance

Your residency is close to the threshold — for example 7.5 years and you are unsure whether time abroad counts against you

🔄

You have received a rejection and want to appeal to the Migration Court (Migrationsdomstolen)

👨‍👩‍👧

You have children in your application that Migrationsverket now requires a separate application for

What does an immigration lawyer actually do?

An immigration lawyer specialising in citizenship guides you through the entire process — from the initial assessment to a potential appeal. It is not just about "speaking to Migrationsverket on your behalf" in general — it involves concrete legal steps:

1. Initial assessment

The lawyer reviews your specific situation: residency, income sources, any criminal entries, and time abroad. You get a clear answer on whether you meet the requirements — and what the risks are. Typically costs SEK 1,000–2,000 for 30–60 minutes.

2. Document review

The lawyer identifies which documents strengthen your application and which gaps could lead to rejection. This includes pay slips, tax certificates, population registration documents, and any explanations for irregular income or time abroad.

3. Correspondence with Migrationsverket

If Migrationsverket requests additional information or asks questions, the lawyer formulates legally precise responses. Incorrect or incomplete answers at this stage are a common cause of rejection.

4. Appeal to the Migration Court

On rejection, you have 3 weeks to appeal. The lawyer analyses the specific grounds for rejection, identifies legal errors, and writes an appeal addressing exactly the points Migrationsverket questioned. A generic appeal without legal precision has low chances of success.

5. Further appeal (MiÖD)

If the Migration Court also rejects, the lawyer can apply for leave to appeal at the Migration Court of Appeal (Migrationsöverdomstolen). Leave is rarely granted — but when it is, it sets a precedent for similar cases.

What does a lawyer cost?

An initial consultation typically costs SEK 1,000–3,000 and takes 30–60 minutes. Many firms offer a fixed price for an assessment of your situation. Hiring a lawyer for the full case (including a potential appeal) typically costs SEK 10,000–30,000 depending on complexity.

Legal aid: If you have a low income you may be entitled to state legal aid (rättshjälp). Contact your lawyer or the Legal Aid Authority (Rättshjälpsmyndigheten) for more information.
