Swedish Citizenship Test 2026 — Dates, Content, and How to Prepare

From 6 June 2026, knowledge requirements apply to citizenship applications. The civics test starts at the latest 17 August 2026, administered by UHR and free of charge. The Swedish language test is delayed to at the latest October 2027.

The civics test — what is tested?
The civics test covers basic knowledge about Sweden. UHR is responsible for developing and administering the test. The exact content will be published by UHR before the test launches.

The language test — delayed to 2027
The Swedish language test has been delayed and is not expected before October 2027. It is being developed by linguistics researchers at the Universities of Gothenburg and Stockholm.
Language test required levels (when it launches)

Exemptions from the knowledge requirement
The knowledge requirement applies to applicants aged 16–66. Exemptions may be granted for:
- →Applicants aged 67 or older (automatically exempt)
- →Children under 16 (automatically exempt)
- →Permanent illness or disability that objectively prevents participation — apply for exemption via Migrationsverket with medical documentation

Is the test free?
Yes. The civics test from August 2026 is free of charge.
Can I register for the test myself?
No. You are invited by Migrationsverket when your application is at the relevant stage. You cannot register independently.

No. The knowledge requirement applies only to applicants aged 16–66. Those older than 66 are automatically exempt.
Will my SFI D grade count as proof of Swedish for the language test?
An SFI D grade may exempt you from the language test. Exact details will be published by UHR and Migrationsverket before the test launches in 2027.
