Children and Swedish Citizenship 2026 — Separate Application Required
Last updated: 2026-05-14 · Source: Migrationsverket, Prop. 2025/26:175
New rule from 6 June 2026
Children can no longer be added to a parent's citizenship application. Every child must have their own separate application.
What changed on 6 June 2026?
Previously, children under 18 could be included in a parent's citizenship application. That is no longer possible under the new rules from Prop. 2025/26:175.
“I pågående ärenden där det finns barn som ingår i sin förälders ansökan, kommer vi att kontakta barnets vårdnadshavare.”— Migrationsverket, maj 2026
If your child was already included in your pending application, Migrationsverket will contact you. You will need to submit a separate application for the child.

What documents are needed?
The child's passport or ID, Swedish personal identity number, birth certificate, adoption documents if applicable, custody documentation if relevant. All documents not in Swedish or English require a certified translation.
Fee
The application fee for children is lower than for adults. Check current fees on Migrationsverket's website.
Processing time
Similar to adults — 75% of cases are decided within 56 months. Children's cases are not automatically prioritised.
