Available in every Swedish municipality. Study path 3 (courses C and D) is right for you if you already have basic Swedish and are aiming for B1. Apply through your home municipality.

Folkuniversitetet

Offers SFI and higher-level courses. Present in most larger cities. More structured with more test-prep components than municipal SFI.

Is SFI free?

Yes. SFI is free for anyone registered in a Swedish municipality. From 2026 there is a 3-year time limit. Extensions may be possible in some cases.

Will my SFI D certificate count as proof of Swedish?

An SFI D grade may exempt you from the language test. Exact rules will be published by UHR and Migrationsverket before the 2027 test launches.

What does B1 actually mean in practice?

B1 (CEFR) means you can understand the main points of clear, standard information on familiar topics, hold basic conversations, and write simple texts about your own experiences.

How long does it take to reach B1?

It depends on your background. Someone with no prior Latin-alphabet literacy may need 2–4 years. Someone with a European language background can reach B1 in 6–18 months.
